I have a tiny obsession with Victor Hugo’s handwriting right now. I found all of Les Amis in the original manuscript and (in some cases - I’m looking at you Bossuet and Feuilly) made them legible enough to fit into a set.

Jehan would have liked to say that she was one with the written word; that the souls of dead poets and hers were intertwined and they lived in her head as surely as they lived in her heart, but that would have been pretentious and she was anything but. Still, she couldn’t deny the kinship she felt with the lofty words written by those long gone. When she was younger she would escape to her garden, and just look at the flowers. She’d watch them grow wild and free, and when uncared for, wilt away and die. It was in her little garden where she grew up, and it was also where she formed all of her ideals, and her knowledge of the world.

Looking at her, with her frilly dresses and colourful stockings and flowers woven into her hair, you’d think she escaped from a Keats poem. Gentle and kind; beautiful and nurturing, but there was more to her than that. The words that flew from her pen, ink weaving into frail parchment (for she despised electronics as a means for her art), spoke not only of beauty but of truth and justice. Jehan’s kind nature was what cemented her idealism. She hated to see injustices done, and to see people take inequality as the social norm. When she spoke, her voice was soft and sweet, but to hear her speak of social justice, you’d see a completely different woman. Her voice was as firm as her beliefs, and it rang through a room clear as a bell.

I want to write about these girls.

When I was a teenager my mother found my grandmother’s (her mother) school scrapbook. It included things like photos, notes, and a two page spread of every demerit she ever received over the course of her formal education. Each of them set aside with little tags like she was so fucking proud of them. They were all for things like, “Unladylike behavior” or, “Skirt too short” or, “refuses to listen to authority”. I loved that spread so much.

I always have to reblog this.
